A stepparent is a man
or woman who has chosen the role of nurturing one or more minor or adult kids of his or her mate. A stepfamily
includes at least one stepparent and one
minor or grown stepchild.
In
some ways, nurturing (filling the needs of) your mate’s child/ren is no
different than nurturing a
biological child. In other ways, it is much more complex, confusing, and conflictual – and often less rewarding.
This slide presentation is written by a veteran stepfather,
stepfamily therapist, and stepfamily educator. It presents an experience-based framework for doing “well enough” as a stepmom or stepdad. These slides contains
links to related slide presentations
and more detailed articles in the nonprofit Stepfamily inFormation Web site.
Effective stepparenting is part of a larger project – effective co-parenting.
Project 10 in
this nonprofit Web site offers a framework to achieve that.
This presentation is for
stepparents, bioparents (including ex mates), older stepchildren, relatives, and lay and professional supporters. The best time to
study this is before deciding to form or join a stepfamily!
